In the above-quoted "Ahead of the Tape" (Evans, WSJ 8.13.10), it is shown that CPI figures are grossly distorted by housing costs representing 40% of the index. See the following AZ Republic article on recommending a better measuring tool for housing affordability (housing + transportation costs):

("Can you afford to live in your house?" Holstege, 5.7.10)
The galling thing about this hiding overheating sectors of the US economy while the Fed vainly tries to apply defibrillators to a dying economy as Obama & the congressional Dems continue to slash its throat is that this also hides the looming inflation from the QE2 implemented as another measure supposedly to help pay for an obviously unsustainable mess of entitlement programs metastatisizing like cancers in a jobless economy that's rapidly wasting away.
The raw fact is that Obama continues to apply his foot to the gas (while claiming to have it on the brake) as our economy hurtles over the cliff and blames conservatives falsely for problems created by Carter & Clinton (much as the media & a few drivers unjustly blamed Toyota for driver-error-caused accidents).
